  1. You could always opt for the easy way to get there, and that's a day tour from London. They'll drive you straight there, tell you all about it, give you time to wander around it, take you to some other places, (I did Salisbury Cathedral when I went on the tour), then take you back to London. Faffing around with public transport in the UK is a pain in the behind.

The train to Salisbury is quite expensive anyway, so the tour price is similar to that.

  2. Stonehenge is about 85 miles from London.

The coach takes you within 2 miles of Stonehenge (walkable if you want to save money or heighten the experience). The rail takes you 9.5 miles away. The coach is cheaper since the destination is so much closer.

The buses depart from Heathrow Airport and from Victoria Coach Station in the centre of London. The journey takes about 2 hours. ** Get off at Amesbury. ** From there you can either walk (about 2 miles), catch a local bus, or get a taxi.

You can buy tickets on the coach, at the coach station, or from ticket agents for National Express. It is the cheapest way to travel to Stonehenge.

If it was me I would take the bus to Amesbury (pop 9000) in the morning and then look for local transport to get to Salisbury (pop 45000). Salisbury has more interesting sights and more options for a late lunch. You can go back to London on the train in the evening.

  3. It has been  many years since I have been from London to Stonehedge and I do not live there now but I can tell you that it is a remarkable place!  Plan to spend some time there because you will really want to soak up the whole experience.  I was younger when I was there and really didn't understand the whole thing.  But I was over whelmed by the size of it...and the fact that there is NOTHING around for miles.  At least there wasn't anything when we were there.  Really makes you wonder how it got there.

Take wonderful pictures and have fun!

  4. Train to Salisbury and local bus from there.

The coach to/from Amesbury is useless for a day visit to Stonehenge as there is only one a day, from Amesbury to London in the morning and back from London to Amesbury in the evening.
