Question:

Travelling in France by train?

I have looked at booking a train ticket online for travel in France and I noticed it is cheaper if you are under 25. Do you need to buy special railcard for young people to get this discount like in the UK or can I just show my passport to prove my age?

  1. Hello,

I'm French : you just have to prove your age with your passport.

So,what you can do, is book online... the system will calculate a 25% rebate. If you had a 12-25 card (French card, of course) you could just travel on more trains... and, maybe on some, get a 50% rebate... but, you'd have to buy your ticket long in advance.

Have a look at this link : http://www.voyages-sncf.com/guide/voyage...

There's another way to get 50% off... buy your ticket between 60-30 days in advance (Prem's)... and there you don't have to prove your age or anything, but if you don't use the ticket... it's lost.

Have a good trip in France.

  2. Tell us more about this discount - what's the name - give us a link.

Some of them need a special card like "carte jeune" , it's usually  written on the ticket "carte à présenter" : card to be shown.

But some other discounts do not need a card, it's usually written on the ticket "justificatif à présenter" : justify your discount (with an ID)

  3. You do need a special railcard. It will cost you 49 euros, it is valid for a year and you will get 50% off, which is quite good since train is expensive in France. As a bonus, you can use the card in hotels like: novotel, mercure, suitehotel and get discount.
