Travelling in Ireland?

Question

I am going to Ireland for Xmas and New Years with a friend but dont want to take a car. Whats the best way to get around? We want to see Dublin, Galway, Derry and Belfast.

The public transit around Dublin was good when I visited (it was called the DART)  Besides, half the fun is getting out and walking the streets. To get to the West coast, you'll probably need to rent a car- that's what the locals suggested to me but I didn't have time on that trip.

P.S. Don't forget to visit Newgrange!

If you fly into Dublin airport then you can

Head North first if you get a bus direct to Belfast from Dublin Airport and then a bus or train to Derry. You can get train from the same station as bus. Best to come back to Belfast.

There is also a bus from Belfast to Galway.

If you want then get train or bus back to Dublin.

Only problem with buses (they are cheapest by far) is motion sickness as they ted to throw you around quite a lot.

You can easily do the cities without a car. Dublin has good rail connections to Cork, Galway and Belfast.

I took the bus to Derry myself the other week and arrived in just over 4 and a half hours - don't mind stories of eight hours.

Well, ye canna do wrong by cabbie, and they do know the ins and outs of the area. I've visited 3 of the four you mentioned, and my favorite was Dublin. You are wise to not take a car. Tip well, it's good luck (and they'll always treat ye fair).

Galway and Belfast are connected by an excellent railway service to Dublin but not to each other. Its 170 miles from Dublin to Galway and about 90 miles Dublin to Belfast. I can't BELIEVE the gobshite who is suggesting a taxi. Taxis for a week in Ireland at Christmas allow about 2000 dollars, for chrissake it costs €40 to go about ten miles in Dublin.

I did southern Ireland a afew years ago and we flew into Dublin then drove across to Galway and then worked out way down the west coast and it was gorgeous. I guess if you want to do Belfast too, then you should probably start there are work your way down. We hired a car when we got there and it was a really good price so you might want to consider that because it's more comfortable than public transport and the roads in Ireland are lovely and there's not much traffic either.

use the transport system such as a bus train or a taxi i wuldn't go for the taxi they cost a lot the bus would be a gud way of getting round ireland

If you are flying into Dublin they stay there first.  They have some good inexpensive hotels in the Temple Bar area easy to find.  About 20.00EURO by cab.   Everything is within walking distance from Temple Bar and at night it is the best party spot in Dublin.  Galway is about three almost four hours from Dublin its the party spot for young people for me.  You can get there by train Ireland rail.  Straight shot check though some trains do not go right into some towns.  Cabbies are expensive if you do not know your way around.

Derry and Belfast is almost 8 hours by car because of the Irish roads.  From Dublin. The rail tickets can cost from 5 day to 10 day passes very good prices and go where you want to go.  Can get online http://www.irishrail.ie/home/

Best way is by bus (bus eireinn) its cheaper then train and you can get a service to almost anywhere

the luas is a great way to get around Dublin city but it's routes are limited. around galway you can walk more or less anywhere you want. to get to the different cities i'd take the train. buses from dublin to galway stop in every small town on the way down and could take up to 5 hours.
