  1. how long are you staying? if just one or two days i suggest to avoid museums and just walk around the town: colosseum, roman forum, trevi fountain, spanish steps, st. peter's basilica, campo de' fiori, piazza navona, pantheon, trastevere, ghetto... from the "altare della patria" in piazza venezia there is a great panorama. other great views of the town from the gianicolo and from the pincio.

if you are staying for a week or so and you are interested in archaeology i suggest you to visit the museo at palazzo massimo (near the main station), in particular the third floor with great roman frescoes. i am not a great fan of the vatican museums: it is big and chaotic. if you decide to go you have to be there very early in the morning as the line can be veeeeeeery long. the visit will take you almost an entire day.

there is one big flea market every sunday in porta portese from 7am to 2pm.

if you can read italian i suggest you to check the website http://www.romacultura.it to find information about theaters, museum, art shows etc..

  2. coliseum, Trevi fountain, Spanish Steps, Vatican, museums and art galleries.

beware of pick pockets and gypsy kids
