  1. Youyi Guan / Hghi Quan border crossing has train traffic. I have never done this myself but I have friends that have and they said it was easy and inexpensive.  Also Its cheaper to buy tickets in China than it is in Vietnam.

the LaoCai / Hekou crossing is popular with travellers and has a road bridge and separate rail bridge over the Red River.  But there are no direct trains at this crossing.  The Viet train stops at the border and you have to take a bus on the other side.

So the primary train crossing is at Youyi Guan / Hghi quan

this is usually reffered to as the "Friendship Gate"

You do need a Visa before entering Vietnam.  I recommend this site.

    http://www.visa-vietnam.org/infomation/a...

But please make sure that you can get your visa at the border crossing.  I have only recieved my visas at airports so check it out carefully.

    Good luck.
