  1. You can easily visit Japan as a tourist, but staying and working is much more difficult.  From what I understand, unless you have some other tie, such as family already in legal residence there, you will pretty much need to obtain a job offer before you go, and have your employer sponsor you for a work visa (you must have a work visa in order to work in the country, and to obtain it, you must have an employer and a guarantor who will stand responsible for you while you are in the country).

  2. If you're going as a tourist you can't work. Don't even try, you'll get deported.

If you do want to work you need to be sponsored by an employer for a work visa before you go. A degree is a minimum requirement.

  3. Travelling is OK, but you need a labour visa to work.  If you want to use science background, you should be employed by a Japanese company, etc, in the UK first and  hope that they will send you to Japan.  The second option, it is easy to teach English here in Japan.  But the immigration office is rather tough nowadays, so that you should apply to one of English Language Schools in the UK, which have their schools in Japan, and get visa.  You need a qualification to teach English for foreigners.  If not, it is difficult to be employed by English Schools owned by the British.  Other English schools (American, Japanese owners), they won't hire you if you are not university graduate.

If you are not seriously hoping to get a job in Japan, forget about working, just enjoy travelling!

  4. Completing a TEFL course is by no means essential to teach English in Japan, but a university degree is.

  5. Unless you speak Japanese you will be stuck finding a job in your field. About 90% of Japanese only speak Japanese. You maybe able to teach English, but would need  to complete a  TEFL course.

I was in Japan and used the Rail Pass. It was a little expensive but once  you are out there you have already saved, as the price of the pass is the same as a return ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto.

The pass must be bought before you leave home, as once you are inside Japan you can not purchase them.
