Question:

Travelling to Dublin via Plane?

Ok, so i'm planning a trip to Dublin and have been told off some people that i need a passport.

However, my mate who's also going tells me that i don't. I have a citizen card (photo ID) and that proves who i am and where i'm from. He says that theres an unoffical agreement between the UK and Republic of Ireland which allows everyone to travel between the two countries using a photo ID.

Who's actually right?

  1. If you fly, bring a passport. It may not be necessary, but it's a good idea. The US for most of my life would let it's citizens travel to several countries with just id/ a drivers license.... but all that is changing and soon it will be passport only. As a result - huge demand and delays in getting passports. So, my advice - get the passport now, avoid the inevitable rush when the rules change (and they will)

Each airline likes to have different rules as well - not helpful!

It's happening with all countries these days due to terrorism concerns. Sad....

  2. well for years thats been the case, you didnt need a passport,

but thats now changed and you do need a pass port, im not sure if the law is in effect yet but if i were u i'd bring your passport to be on the safe side

  3. It can vary between airlines as to what they will accept as photo id. They all accept passports. Most will accept a drivers license. You'll have to contact the airline your flying with and ask them if your id will be accepted. For example i fly with airlingus and they accept my bus pass as id but ryanair dont.

  4. its hard to know whose right..some airlines allow you to check in with a photo id going 2 uk but some dont..i think customs alow you.

to be on the safe side just bring you passport aswell as you photo id

  5. depends on the airline...check with them, it should state it on their website...i know some just need photo ID but its always best to have a passport just incase

  6. No if your flying over here you will need a valid passport!  You don't need one for the boat though as your ID would be sufficient enough... There was a time when you could fly from UK to Ireland without a passport but that's all changed now!...

  7. Get the passport.

  8. just bring your passport to be on the safe side
