ok guys. I am staying in Melbourne for 3 nights (June 24-27). I was wondering what you guys recommend doing there, what to bring, what type of clothes to wear, what the climate is like at that time of the, what to see in those 3 days, transport etc.. Thanks

PS Btw, I'm a 21 yr old male. I am really looking forward to seeing Melbourne, as I've heard a lot about it. This time last year, I went to Perth. Perth was very nice, but unfortunately, it rained a lot.

  1. it's freaking frezzing here at the moment - bring warm clothes! go to a footy game at the MCG, drink beer and eat pies

  2. well melbourne is pretty dam could around june, you'll get away with wearing a jumper/sweater and jeans during the day, but at night it can get down to 5-6 degrees, even less sometimes (Celsius) so bring some more wintery clothes, just in case.

melbourne public transport although not as extensive as sydney's system, is much more organised and cheaper-you wont need to buy separate fares for buses, trains and trams, the one ticket works on all public transport, you can buy daily, weekly and monthly tickets or a 2 hour ticket (pretty self explanatory) the only thing that might be a little confusing is the zones- melbourne public transport is split up into two zones (zone 1 being inner melbounre downtown or CBD and inner suburbs and zone 2 being melbournes outer suburbs) you can buy a ticket that is valid in both zone one and zone two, but they are more expensive, my suggestion is that if your just doing city sight seeing then youll have no reason to leave zone 1 anyway (i live in melbourne and i only buy zone 1 tickets, i have never needed a zone 2)

if your coming from the airport then i too suggest you take the "skybus" its a private bus company that runs from the airport to the CBD every 15 minutes or so, much cheaper and easier than taking a cab,  (melbourne's main airport is quite a fair distance from the city centre)

melbourne is pretty different to sydney or perth....its not a resort city, its often referred to as the cultural capital of australia, there is also a really big cafe/bar culture in melbourne. so generally you'll expect that when being shown around melbounre by friends or locals youll be taken to art galleries/ museums/ concerts/ the theatre and live music rather than beaches, landmarks or natural wonders.

personally I can recommend a few places to hang out but my personal taste may differ from yours (i tend to enjoy alternative music/culture) if you want to see some great live bands there is "the espy" in st kilda or the "ding dong lounge" in an alley way in china town, in fact a lot of bars are down alley ways in melbourne you may have to get your hands dirty to have a good time hahahahhaha!

melbourne is really a very big multicultural city

Victoria street in richmond has a big veitnamese feel Lygon street in carlton used to be a very big italian part of the city but has become more commercial in the past few years. Brunswick street in Fitzroy is a trendy/uni student/alternative hang out while the northern end of chapel street in Prahan or south bank (on the opposite side of the river to the CBD) is the place to go for clubbing.- all the places I’ve mentioned are close to the CBD (within 15 or 20 minutes by public transport or within waling distance)

if you do want to do the sight seeing stuff you may have to go further out of your way, but places that are close to the city centre or in it is; the war memorial- a giant art deco style monument to australian soldiers. the botanical gardens and the old exhibition building- it was the capital of australia while Canberra was being built.

    Good luck have fun man
