  1. Here's my suggestion to you, don't go to Winnipeg.

  2. I think the poster above me did a great job answering your question I just wanted to give a few more suggestions. We have several hotels that have been rated three stars and are sadly lacking- My husband has been a cook in a lot of these  so I will give you a list of ones in safe areas that I know to be fairly good

Canad Inns are always good- the first four are the better ones and safest http://www.canadinns.com/hotels/2_1_hote...

    Clairion is nice

    http://www.clarionhotelwinnipeg.com/

Place Louis Riel is just okay but does have apartment like rooms

Holiday Inns are good here- one on Pembina is nice as is the one on Portage

*I would reccomend personaly the Inn at the forks- it is in a great tourist area here and I think it would be a great place for you to stay-its one of our newest and rated #1*

    There is also the fairmont

    http://www.fairmont.com/winnipeg/

    The ramada downtown

    Delta

    For reviews try

    http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g15495...

The ones listed are in good areas

Our hostels, if you were thinking that way, are not in the greatest area and though I have reccomended downtown with hotels also, downtown is a place you have to be a little cautious at night-  there is one hostel there

For Retaurants this is a good website

Provincial Park only 20 mins away actually is Birds Hill

Good luck and enjoy your trip-like the poster above any questions feel free to email

    hope this helped

  3. I don't know how much you're wanting to spend, but The Fort Garry is probably one of the nicest hotels in Winnnipeg. It's in the down town area, close to The Forks and a few shopping centers, and I loved it when I was there. I know my brother, who travels a lot, prefers to stay in a bed and breakfast. Picking one of those normally depend on what part of Winnipeg you plan on staying in.

As for places to eat; really that depends on your food preference and budget. I don't know if you're even from Canada; that makes a difference on whether some of these restaurants are new to you, or 'same old, same old'

I've included a second link to the Fort Garry, which list attractions and restaurants near there; most are quite good. Wasabi's is a sushi restaurant, Earl's and the Keg both have excellent food (be prepared to pay)

    Hope I helped somewhat. ^_^

  4. Take it from someone who knows- Winnipeg is a really great city and I hope you enjoy it.

The other poster is right- the Fort Garry hotel is great but very expensive, as are the restaurants listed...

Could you give me an idea as to the purpose of your visit (i.e. business? pleasure?). This would help a lot in giving you specific suggestions on where to stay and where to eat.

    EDIT

Okay, great! That actually does help. For a pleasure trip, you can stay pretty much anywhere in the city. I would recommend you check out www.hotelsbycity.com- they have all of the Wpg. hotels listed there. However, I would recommend you use the 'how many stars' search option and have a minimum of 3 stars as your starting point. Anything less will likely be unpleasant. If you have a hotel in mind but want to know more about location, etc, feel free to PM me.

For restaurants: we have everything you could want from fast-food to fine dining. A middle of the road option is Applebee's; you can get good meals for about $10-15 CDN per person, more if you have alcohol. Other options would be Bellamy's, and Perkins. Perkins is a chain restaurant with several locations around the city. They are also open 24 hrs.

Others will recommend Earls and Moxie's- however, if you will be with children, you should know that the servers tend to dress scantily and suggestively. Not exactly bikinis and high heels, but skintight/very low-cut tops, very low-rise pants/skirts, etc. Lots of skin showing. Plus, the meals are very small and very pricey, as are their drinks.

If you have access to a car while here, you should really also check out the possibility of driving out to one of our provincial parks- most are within 1-2 hrs driving distance. You can camp, swim, rent a cottage, go hiking, etc- lots to do. Plus, September is usually still summer weather- anywhere between 20 to 30 C is average.

Getting around Winnipeg is easy; you can drive, take the bus, or take a taxi. We don't have a subway or any other form of public transportation except for the bus system.

If you have any more q's, please PM me. Happy planning!
