Question:

Travelling up North from London....?

Does ANYONE know of a relatively cheap way to get from London to the North-East????

When using the train, I either have to sit by the phone 12 weeks before my date in the hope of getting a limited cheap ticket or pay near enough £95 to get home.

Coaches take at least 6 hours and are torture. Any suggestions????

  1. Fly or drive with friends. I fly between London and Edinburgh it is normal cheap if I book in advance.

  2. Hitchhike!

  3. Sometimes if you book the train tickets in seperate legs it can work out cheaper, such as London to Birmingham, then a ticket from Birmingham to York etc, just making the places up!

Also look on the actual train company's website, ie arriva, best western, rather than using thetrainline etc.  They often have special deals to London & back.

  4. You dont need to sit near a phone - book in advance ( 4 weeks is usually enough)

I just checked on the east midlands train site - a single to newcastle in 4 weeks time would cost 38 pounds.

  5. I looked at your answers, because we have the same problem as you. Sorry there are no brilliant answers. We did book way in advance for next weekend, and got a fairly good deal, but then because Sky decided to show the football match we are going to, we had to change the leg back. My husband wont tell me how much that cost!!!!!!!

Grand Central run from Kings Cross to Sunderland for a reasonable fixed price, but I do not know how reliable they are. They had lots of cancellations when they first started off. Have a look at www.grandcentralrail.co.uk

Thanks! You have reminded me to check them out again!

  6. Check out this share ride site. Bug travel I think it's called.

Sorry that was for Europe. Try 'lift share.com'
