Question:

Travelling with Kids?

I am currently 9 months (37 weeks pregnant). I have a 5 (6 in November) year old step daughter from my spouse's first marriage.

We are looking into going on a trip this Christmas (approved already by our doctor) with ourselves and the kids. Both my spouse and I have only travelled out of country by ourselves (never with kids) so we're not quite sure what's the best way with kids.

Questions I have are:

1. Does anyone have any first hand experience with what worked/didn't work when travelling with kids?

2. Has anyone used the babysitting services offered by more expensive resorts...and if so, what was your thoughts on them?

3. We've also thought about taking our parents or other friends along (who have kids) to help with the kids. We'd like to have one adult oriented night out of the week. Has anyone done this? Pros and cons?

4. What are some safety precautions you've taken with bringing your children along?

Thanks for all your input! It's appreciated.

  1. We went to Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and Puerto Rico (San Juan area) when our kids were six months and just about three.  On Tortola, we rented a villa, which gave us lots of extra space.  We met some relatives there, but did not wind up leaving the kids with them for some alone time (good idea, though!).  While in Puerto Rico, we actually stayed with relatives, which saved some money and was nice for visiting, but still felt a bit cramped and like an imposition.

Overall, we had no problems traveling with a baby and a toddler.  They had a great time, and so did we.  Just make sure to bring some familiar toys and books -- especially for the restaurants.  If you're traveling out of the country, make sure to bring baby food, diapers, etc, because you don't know what's available in different locations.

Our kids are now 4 and 7, but we haven't done the babysitting thing at resorts.  Usually when we travel we wind up renting a house or camping.  I think I'd feel a little uneasy leaving my kids "alone" somewhere without hearing from a bunch of references.

We've gone on vacations with relatives, and it does make things a bit easier.  Even if you don't leave your kids with them, it's nice to have an extra set of eyes.  My suggestion is to either rent a large house or separate hotel rooms.  Make sure you have plenty of space, and don't think you have to spend every minute together.

BTW -- Tortola and the British Virgin Islands are absolutely incredible -- beautiful and safe.  I very highly recommend a visit.

    Good luck with your plans.
