Travis Logie and Brett Simpson survive Round 2 at 2012 Hurley Pro
South Africa’s Travis Logie and America’s Brett Simpson made the Round 3 cut at the 2012 Hurley Pro, sixth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, after claiming top honours in their respective Round 2
heats that went down at Lower Trestles in California, America, on Monday, September 17.
Logie prevailed over Brazil’s Miguel Pupo in the ninth heat to secure his place in the third round while bringing the event to an early end for his rival in the process.
The tenth heat saw Australia’s Kieren Perrow fail to keep Simpson from walking away with the win, consequently getting eliminated from the competition while sending the latter into the next round.
The iconic Lower Trestles offered three-to-four foot waves on the latest day of the competition, setting up an ideal stage for the elite ASP surfers to show off their stylish skills in front of the huge crowd in attendance.
Pitted against Pupo in the ninth heat, Logie put on an impressive performance to walk away with the win. The South African surfer managed to score an impressive 7.50 off his first business-wave and later added an additional 5.43 points to his account, thus
reaching a heat-total of 12.93 points.
Pupo finished with a two-wave total of 11.77 points, which comprised of a 6.50 and 5.27-point ride, thus having to make an early exit from the competition as a result.
The tenth heat featured an impressive performance by Simpsons as he got the better of Perrow to secure the Round 3 spot.
The local talent made an effective use of his local knowledge of the waves to find a 7.33-point ride half-way through the heat and later backed it up with an 8.50-point ride, thus finishing with a decisive heat-total of 15.83 points.
“I was stoked,” Simpson said. “I like a lot of waves and I like to get my feet in the wax. KP (Kieren Perrow) is a great competitor, a great surfer and he did what I expected, which was to wait for good ones. I took my chances on some smaller ones and the
judges rewarded me and I’m glad. I just threw out that bad heat yesterday and I was able to find those little ones that I could link a few turns in on.”
Perrow, on the other hand, failed to deliver for the second time in a row, this time only managing to earn a couple of scores in the six-point range off his best-two waves to register a heat-total of 12.70 points. As a result, he was eliminated from the
competition.
