Travis Logie and CJ Hobgood prevail in Round 2 of Billabong Pipe Masters – 2011 ASP World Tour
The final stop of the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour and Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing, Billabong Pipe Masters, continued to treat the crowd to thrilling action on the opening day of the event with exciting Round 2 battles. The
11th heat of Round 2 pitted South Africa’s Travis Logie against Portugal’s Tiago Pires, while America’s CJ Hobgood squared off with Brazil’s Jadson Andre in the 12th heat.
Despite being a low-scoring contest, the 11th heat was not low on intensity as the two surfers fought tooth and nail for survival. In the end, however, Logie emerged triumphant and thus headed into Round 3, while the competition came to a premature
end for Pires.
The 12th heat came down to a nail-biting finish as well, with the outcome of the contest coming in Hobgood’s favour and consequently sending the American surfer into Round 3 while eliminating Andre from the competition.
The 32-year-old Logie had looked really uncomfortable in the deadly barrels that were on offer at the Banzai Pipeline. Little changed as he competed with the ‘Portuguese Tiger; Pires in the 11th heat of Round 2 in a battle for survival. Both the
surfers were looking to wrap up the season with a good result and thus were determined to survive the elimination round.
As the 11t heat got underway, Logie got down to business almost immediately and locked a wave to earn 4.67 points off it. Pires responded with a 3.50-point wave, making his discomfort in the 15-to-20 foot waves evident as well.
As the heat progressed, Pires added another 2.17 points to his account, taking his heat-total to 5.67 points. Logie did not have much of a hurdle to jump over to claim victory, but the challenging waves kept him at bay for most part of the heat. However,
he barely managed to collect a 1.13 off his final wave to move to a heat-total of 5.80 points and clinch the win.
The last heat of the day and final heat of Round 2 saw the 32-year-old Hobgood battle it out with the Brazilian force, Andre, for survival. Both the surfers stretched each other to the limit in the giant waves and never allowed the other to relax for even
a minute as the hunt for competitive scores was carried out.
Hobgood locked his first business-wave in the early minutes of the heat to post a 4.67 on the score-board and later followed it up with a 5.03-point wave, finishing with a heat-total of 9.70 points as a result.
Andre’s first business-wave turned out to be pretty mediocre as well and merely earned him a 3.50. However, he managed to add a much more solid score of 5.77 points to his account. However, that proved to be inadequate in the end, making him finish 0.43
points behind the required score. As a result of yet another loss, Andre was ejected from the competition.
