Travis Logie and Damien Hobgood advance to Round 3 of Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach – Surfing News
South Africa’s Travis Logie and America’s Damien Hobgood confirmed their place in the third round of the latest 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour event, Rip Curl Pro, after prevailing in their respective Round 1 heats that went down
at Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Logie defeated Australia’s Adrian Buchan and his fellow countryperson Josh Kerr in the ninth heat to advance directly into the third round while relegating his rivals to Round 2.
The 10th heat saw Hobgood get the better of his brother CJ Hobgood and French Polynesia’s Michel Bourez to confirm his place in the tenth heat, forcing both Hobgood and Bourez to take a trip to the relegation round.
As the latest ASP elite tour event reached the final heat of day 1, it featured Logie, Buchan and Kerr in a three-man battle for the Round 3 spot. With clean three-to-four foot waves on offer at the primary event site, there were plenty of opportunities
for the world’s best surfers to post a big score on the score-board.
As the battle got underway, Logie struggled to open his account in what was turning out to be a wave-starved heat. However, he eventually locked his first business-wave to post a 4.50 on the score-board and later backed it up with an impressive 6.43-point
wave for a heat-total of 10.93 points. The effort kept him in lead until the end to carry him through into the third round.
Buchan finished in second place with a heat-total of 10.90 points, which included a 4.57 and 6.33-point wave, whereas Kerr rounded out the third position after scoring a 3.00 and 5.50 for a heat-total of 8.50 points. Both the surfers had plenty of thinking
to do before heading into Round 2 to have another go at securing a place in Round 3.
As the competition resumed at Bells Beach on Wednesday, Damien Hobgood took on CJ Hobgood and Bourez in a three-man battle.
Damien put on a superb performance during the course of the event, scoring a 7.00 off his first business-wave and backing it up with a 7.40-point wave for a heat-total of 14.40 points. The score remained unbeatable until the end to seal the fate of the 30-minute
battle in his favour.
CJ was forced to settle for second place after scoring a 4.67 and 6.87 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 11.54 points. Bourez finished last with a heat-total of 10.97 points, which comprised of a 5.07 and 5.90-point wave.
