Travis Logie and Jordy Smith prevail in Round 1 at O’Neill Coldwater Classic
South Africa’s Travis Logie and his fellow countryperson Jordy Smith emerged triumphant their respective Round 1 heats at O’Neill Coldwater Classic, the ninth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, which
went down at Santa Cruz in California, America, on Thursday, November 1, 2012.
Logie defeated France’s Jeremy Flores and America’s CJ Hobgood in the 11th heat to secure his place in the third round, relegating both his rivals into the second round to surf again for a place in Round 3.
The 12th heat saw Smith prevail over Portugal’s Tiago Pires and Australia’s Adrian Buchan, consequently making his way through into the third round, while forcing both his rivals into the next round to have another shot at the Round 3 spot.
The best surfers from around the globe continued to take each other on in three-man battles to try earning the Round 3 spot without having to surf in Round 2.
Squaring-off against Flores and Hobgood in the 11th heat, Logie wasted absolutely no time to assert his dominance in the three-man battle.
The South African surfer locked his first business-wave to earn a 9.10 off it and later added another 6.17 points to his account, thus reaching a heat-total of 15.27 points.
Flores offered a strong challenge to Logie, earning an 8.83 and 6.10 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 14.93 points, thus falling short of victory by 0.34 points.
Hobgood collected a couple of scores in the two-point range for a heat-total of 4.37, which put him in third place.
The final heat in the opening round of the latest elite tour event pitted Smith against Pires and Buchan in a three-man battle for the Round 3 place.
The South African powerhouse opened his account with an 8.67-point ride and soon backed it up with a 7.43-point ride, thus reaching a heat-total of 16.10 points, thus walking away with the win.
Pires collected a couple of scores in the seven-point ride, thus finishing in second place with a heat-total of 15.67 points.
Buchan finished in third place after earning a 5.73 off his first business-wave half-way through the heat and immediately following it up with a 6.20-point ride for a two-wave total of 11.93 points.
