Travis Logie and Kolohe Andino bounce back in Round 2 to continue Rip Curl Pro Portugal skirmish
South Africa’s Travis Logie and America’s Kolohe Andino made it through into the third round at Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the eighth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, after claiming top honours in their
respective Round 2 heats that went down at Supertubos in Peniche, Portugal, on Sunday, October 14.
Logie got the better of America’s Damien Hobgood in the 11th heat to secure his place in the third round while removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
The 12th heat saw Portugal’s Tiago Pires failing to keep Andino from walking away with the win and thus had to find himself a place among the spectators, where he was going to catch the rest of the event from.
The challenging two-to-three foot waves gracing the main event site on the latest day of the competition was making it real tough for the elite ASP surfers to cut loose and kept them at bay, forcing them to put in an extra effort to hold their own while
searching for a couple of decent scores.
The 11th heat saw Logie take on Hobgood in such testing conditions, with the pressure of elimination hanging over both of them.
It turned out to be an intense battle, with both the surfers doing everything they possibly could under the given circumstances, but in the end it was the South African surfer who managed to emerge triumphant with a heat-total of 10.94 points against his
American rival’s two-wave total of 10.27 points.
“Damo (Hobgood) is a good friend of mine and he’s definitely one of the guys you don’t want to get out here as he’s so good in the barrel,” Logie said. “He’s beaten me so many times in all sorts of ‘QS and ‘CT events so I’m stoked to get one over him but
he’s a good friend I’m also bummed to see him down.”
The final heat of Round 2 concluded in the favour of Andino as the Californian sensation got the better of the local favourite Pires, though just barely.
It turned out to be yet another nail-biting affair, with both the surfers fighting tooth and nail to get an advantage over each other.
However, in the end it turned out to be Andino’s day as he managed to get to a heat-total of 11.70 points, while Pires finished only 0.20 points behind him to taste defeat.
