Travis Logie and Tim Boal power into Round 4: Billabong Azores Islands Pro – ASP Prime Event
Billabong Azores Islands Pro continued to treat the fans to a heavy dose of thrilling action with the ninth and tenth heat of Round of 24 (Round 3) on Friday, September 30, at Praia de Santa Barbara in Sao Miguel, Portugal.
The ninth heat saw South Africa’s Travis Logie prevail over Australia’s Dion Atkinson to confirm his place in the Round of 12 (Round 4), removing his rival from contention for the title in the process.
USA’s Kolohe Andino defeated France’s Tim Boal quite with a comfortable margin in the tenth heat to earn his place in the next round, consequently bringing the event to a premature end for his rival.
The 32-year-old Logie may not have had a memorable Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour season so far, but he has been surely making his presence felt in the Prime event this year. Even with tough surfing conditions at Praia de Santa Barbara,
the South African has been able to perform quite consistently to reach the third round, where he got pitted against Atkinson in a battle for survival.
As the head-to-head showdown got under-way, Atkinson went in for the kill by scoring 5.33 points off a wave in the opening minutes of the heat. He soon added another 5.00 points to his account to reach a heat-total of 10.33 points, taking an upper hand in
the match-up.
Logie managed to earn 5.83 points off a wave early in the heat but struggled to find another good score as the heat progressed. Just when the fate of the contest seemed decided, the South African made a desperate effort on the final wave, scoring 6.10 points
off it to reach a heat-total of 11.93 points. The last-minute effort turned out to be decisive, allowing Logie to walk away with top honours.
The tenth heat saw the 17-year-old Andino take on Boal in a man-on-man battle for the Round 4 spot. The latter had done well to finish in top-two during the previous two rounds but Andino had been arguably making a stronger impact at the latest ASP Prime
event so far.
As the ninth heat commenced, the California-based Andino got on the points table first by locking a wave in the opening minutes to post 6.33 points on the score-board. Boal soon responded with a 5.50-point wave to keep his rival from enjoying a strong upper
hand.
As the heat progressed, the desperate hunt for good scores continued. In the final minutes of the battle, the Frenchman managed to add 5.60 points to his account, moving into the lead with a heat-total of 11.10 points. However, Andino came across a juicy
wave in the dying minutes of the heat to unload a string of exquisite tricks, earning 8.17 points for the effort and finishing with a heat-total of 14.50 points, which consequently sealed the fate of the contest in his favour.
