Travis Mahoney dominates Men’s 200m backstroke prelims – EnergyAustralia SC Championships
Travis Mahoney of Nunawading dominated the preliminary round of the Men’s 200m backstroke on fifth day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Short Course Championships at Challenge Stadium in Perth on Sunday, September 16.
The 22-year-old Mahoney experienced strong resistance from his following swimmer throughout the 200m discipline but with his unrelenting efforts, he succeeded in making his way to the wall as top fastest swimmer.
Mahoney remained just an inch ahead of his toughest challenger and touched the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 54.89 seconds for top qualification spot.
His phenomenal speed remained only 0.05 seconds faster from Ben Edmonds of Unattached, SA, who followed him into the playoff as second best finisher by submitting a time of 1 minute and 54.94 seconds.
Edmonds was traced by Joshua Beaver of Tigersharks, VIC, who stayed 0.25 seconds slower from overpowering his preceding swimmer and entered the final round with a timing of 1 minute and 55.19 seconds for third position.
Fourth finest spot of the race was obtained by Braiden Camm of Chandler, QLD, who was just one arm stroke behind and tapped the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 55.42 seconds.
Camm enjoyed an advantage of Ashley Delaney of Nunawading, who stayed almost 0.80 seconds behind and hit the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 56.21 seconds.
Delaney was trailed by Matson Lawson of Tigersharks, VIC, who stayed 0.24 seconds slower and tapped the wall for sixth position with an effort of 1 minute and 56.45 seconds.
Seventh position of the race was obtained by Jared Goldthorpe of Bayside, NSW, who remained marginally slower from his foregoing finisher and hit the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 56.64 seconds.
Goldthorpe was followed by Jamie Sturgeon of Nudgee Brothers, who stayed 0.29 seconds behind and clocked an effort of 1 minute and 56.93 seconds.
In addition, Mahoney was happy with his fastest qualification effort in the discipline and articulated his desire of reaching the top of medal rostrum by continuing the same in playoff while these swimmers will contend each other in the playoff of the event.
