Travis Mahoney of Nunawading seized gold medal of the Men’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) on day two of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Short Course Championships at Challenge Stadium in Perth on Thursday, September 13.
The 22-year-old Mahoney, who qualified into the playoff as second best finisher, smothered hopes of his opponents in the playoff, as he transpired on the finishing end for gold medal.
With his unrelenting efforts, Mahoney enjoyed an advantage of four and a half seconds over his closest challenger and touched the wall with an effort of 4 minutes and 09.07 seconds for the title of the event.
Mahoney was followed by Jared Gilliland of Nudgee Brothers, who stayed 4.69 seconds behind and hit the wall with an effort of 4 minutes and 13.76 seconds for silver medal.
Gilliland was followed by David Morgan of TSS Aquatics, who was 2.05 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and touched the wall with a timing of 4 minutes and 15.81 seconds.
Morgan was followed by Bradley Lewis of Liverpool, NSW, who was 0.98 seconds behind and settled on the finishing end as fourth fastest swimmer by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 16.79 seconds.
Lewis was chased by Tomas Elliott of Trinity Grammar, who was only 0.03 seconds apart and emerged on the finishing end by reporting an effort of 4 minutes and 16.82 seconds.
Elliott remained Kieran Casey of Ryde-Carlile, who was one and a half body length behind and touched the wall with a timing of 4 minutes and 18.44 seconds for sixth position.
Casey was traced by Jake Baggaley of Trinity Grammar, who was 3.89 seconds slower and completed his race with an effort of 4 minutes and 22.33 seconds for seventh position.
Similarly, Baggaley was followed by Nicholas Findeisen of Firbank Aquastar, who was unable to prove his dominance over any of his opponents and emerged on the finishing end as eighth position holder with a timing of 4 minutes and 29.21 seconds.
Mahoney was pleased with his unmatchable form in the distant IM discipline and raked medal at the victory ceremony after the event.
