Travis Wood flounders as the Cubs lose by 10-2
The Chicago Cubs’ Travis Wood had an unexpectedly poor spell of pitching on Wednesday, March 14, resulting in the team’s defeat. Facing the Milwaukee Brewers in the Cactus League, Wood gave up no less than six runs that led to the Brewers’ 10-2 victory.
Travis Wood had followed Randy Wells in Wednesday’s game, expected to continue the good start the former had made. However, much to the chagrin of the team, Wood utterly failed, serving up six runs.
This was the last outing that Wood would have in the Cactus League. While the whole game was almost a fiasco for the pitcher who is expecting overwhelming challenges in the regular season, Wood agreed with the team manager Dale Sveum’s assertion that he needs to slow down a bit.
"I think he's right," Wood said Wednesday. "I do get going and get going fast out there. But what happened out there today is unacceptable and can't happen."
This could be ultimately disadvantageous for Wood at a time when there is a sense of increased competition as to who will acquire the rotation. The other competitor for it is Randy Wells who had a rather good start.
Wood was previously associated with the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs offer him an avenue which remains enviable for any pitcher. It is for this reason that Wood does not want to think too hard on Wednesday’s debacle.
"You can't think about it," Wells said. "If you do, it'll eat at you. One bad outing will get in your head. I think for the most part, these guys are pretty good talent evaluators, and that's why they're in the position they are. Guys can go out and work on things and get better each day, and it'll be a tough decision for them.”
Much as the Cubs need the pitcher in the defence, Wood has to reconsider a lot of things. He has a space of a few weeks to reflect over where things have gone wrong so as to be able to redress them. Therein lies success for the player as he prepares himself for the bigger tasks ahead.
