I want to lose weight which is better?

Swimming Freestyle

or running on the Treadmill?

I heard the treadmill is harder on your bones and causes you spine to contract but swimming help you grow taller.

Is this true?

  1. I think you should do both. For one there will be more variety and you'll get less bored. Swimming will tone you shoulders and arms, also your thighs. Running will help you gain stamina and work you thighs, lower legs and core. Treadmill shouldn't be the only thing you do as street running is also a good way to escape boredom. It's also preference, do you like swimming or running more?

Addition to the comment above me. Swimming doesn't necessarily lose more weight than running as tone and build strong back and shoulder muscles. As does running help lose weight more whilst burning muscle. Once again it's your choice... be skinny and little tone muscle apposed to athletic and strong muscles.

  2. yeah do both. your running would help you loose weight in different places, while swimming would help you loose weight in others.

  3. Have never heard about swimming helping you grow taller, but i do know that running on anything (treadmills included) is not good for your joints and knees.  Of those two, the best for losing weight would be the treadmill, because it elevates your heart rate more and increases your bodies heat, therefore making you sweat.  Swimming is definitely great exercise though, and perhaps the easiest form of good exercise for your 'entire' body.  I was captain of my high school varsity swim team for two years and use to swim for upwards three hours a day five days a week, not including swim meets.  It is very good for your body and will definitely help boost your endurance.  I would recommend a combination of both, perhaps 15 to 30 minutes on the treadmill 3 days a week, and 45 minutes or more in the pool doing laps three to four times a week.  With this mixture and a healthier diet, if you do not eat healthy already, you should notice results.  Also, due to the increased strain on your joints, i would recommend taking either a glucosomine pill or drink each day. Good luck.

In response to Nrage's comment.  I did not say that swimming will result in more weight loss. I said that running would garner more lbs lost.  Also, while running the streets may be somewhat more entertaining, it is also much harder on your joints, knees, and spine because it is considered high impact.  Jogging on a treadmill is classified as low impact and easier on your body.
