Treat others as you would want to be treated?

Question

What if you want people to make cruel jokes about you; does this mean you can make them? What if you like people throwing cold beverages on you; does this mean you can do that to someone?

Or is there a wider sense that I'm missing?

I think maybe your taking the phrase a bit too literally.  :)

It means, if you want people to be nice to you, you have to be nice to them.  It's like earning someones respect, you won't get it through abuse and bad-mouthing someone.  

It's definitely something a few on this site would do well to remember.

in theory, yes, you can. in theory, you can do that anyways. but you can't guarantee that a cold bevarage is what you'll get back, and the "you" in this "what if" is going to end up a very miserable person.

Meh, i think it just generally means be polite and nice to people, and they'll be polite and nice to you. I spose you can throw a cold drink on someone if you want, but their reaction probably depends on what sorta person they are. They might turn round and slap you, or they might just be upset, or maybe they'll throw a drink on you, who knows?

None of those sayings seem to hold up under closer inspection =P

The real answer to your question is: you would would want kindness and therapy in the event you go insane.  Wouldn't you?

In general, most people would not want these things to happen to them.  If someone is mean to you, that does not give you the right to be mean to that person by way of revenge or retaliation.  Do not feed into the stupidity of such persons.  Ignore them.  They are the kind of people you do not want to hang around with.  It is better not to be mean to others since that only makes the world a meaner place all around.

It means don't hurt others as you NORMALLY don't want to be hurt yourself, treat others as you want to be treated, as if were all nice no one would get hurt.

In answer to your question, if you like cold beverages thrown at you then i would recommend not following this saying.

Not too sure about the tea thing though, could be a little nasty.

I do me best to treat everyone with respect and love, not always easy, but that way people seem to respect me back.  That's much nicer I think than negative energy.

From life's experience I can only add that like attracts like.
