Question:

Treating a fish for Ich and Fin Rot?

I introduced a new goldfish into my tank, 55 gallons, total of 5 goldfish now. The new fish showed signs of ich within a few days, dumb me for not quarantining. Now another fish has it so I've been treating the whole tank with success, should be done with the whole treatment if a week as the white dots are going away. One fish got badly injured in the filter yesterday, the filter is now fixed to not allow that again. His fins are pretty torn and he seems to have a fungal infection on them today. I have him isolated in a little tank by himself but can I treat him for the original ich and now this new fungal development at the same time? Help! Thanks!

  1. Ick is a Parasite, so you would have to use two different treatments for both a fungus and a parasite. Yes you can treat them both at the same time, but there is no garuntee they will live

  2. Almost all Ich medications are extremely effective against fungas as well-- malachite green and copper sulfate are two of the most common active ingredients in parasite and fungal medications.  Add the fish with fungus back to the tank where you're treating for Ich, and you should see improvement within a few days.
