Question:

Treatment and/or American Schools for a 6 year old that lacks core strength?

Hi,

We live in the UK . . .

My son was 7 weeks premature, and he is now 6 years old. He has had physiotherapy for a lack of 'core strength', and has been referred to an Occupational Therapist (still on waiting list).

We are fortunate to have the finances to look into private treatment, and I was wondering if anyone knows of any schools in the USA that work with children like my son.

We can live in the USA or the UK - and as he still cannot dress himself (putting socks on) or climb, run, jump properly, we are willing to sacrifice all so that he can develop at a quicker rate than what he is.

Anyone help?

  1. In Michigan I know there are schools set up for children with disabilities and there are laws that states ALL schools have to provide needed resources for children to help them have the same learning experience as any other child. I have a foster child with learning and emotional difficulties due to abuse and attends a special school called an LISD school where the daily activities are designed to help him with what he needs. Each child is different and the program for there day in school is designed ex specially to help them with what they are lacking and need.

This school gives my son counseling, motor skills counseling and counseling for sensitivity to touch, along with the learning aspects to be able to advance from grade to grade.

  2. I don't think he would need a special school for this.  Any school in the US has OT and you can also get them privately like you said.  I know one exercise they do is have the child balance on a big exercise ball.  There are many exercises to work on core strength through OT if you find a good one.  Good Luck

  3. i live in alabama and beielve it or not we have tremendous resource. my son has low muscle toneand such places like lakeshore.org    have helped him gain 5 pounds of MUSCLE. We too sacrifice it all for him.  We have speial equestian  And depending on his IQ you can send him to good public schools or even a private one. My son goes to a private school.
