my rabbit is sick.he has a mange.it is a sickness where the skin falls out and then a crusty white skin appears.the mange is affecting his nose area and the eyes area.

so we tried taking him to the vet.but the vet says they only treat cats and dogs.and that vet is the only vet around the area.i asked our neighbors if they know some but they said they don't know any other vets.

so we bought him some medicine from a store who sells some medication for pets.

do you think this will work?it is a cream applied on the skin called:

hexacholophene urea sulfanilamide cream.it says it treats ulcerations for large animals(i don't understand the word "ulcerations")

do you know that product?will it work on my rabbit?

please help.and if you could please list some sites about sick rabbits...?

  1. Had a quick google and found this, but I don't know which one your bun has.  Hope this helps!

  2. time for the shot.

  3. Hexachlorophane/hexachlorphene ; a skin antiseptic.

Do not use antiseptics to treat existing skin infections. Antiseptics only reduce microorganisms on the surface of the tissue. Antibiotics will be needed to treat infection within the tissues.

It is important to know that medicines that work on cats and dogs can kill a rabbit.  So, do some reading to make sure that what you get for your bunny is ok.

I understand that many vets don't work with rabbits.  They are NOT long-eared cats!  I would have hoped that he would have at least given you some guidance, but we work with what we have.  I have put a couple of links here that will give you some information and you can ask questions there too.

First; research, read, study... be sure of your diagnosis.  Mange? Mites? are you sure? After treating the infection, you'll need to deal with the parasites, if any .

Much good luck with bunny, I hope it turns out well.

  4. If you're sure its mange caused by mites, then advantage may clear up the problem. If your rabbit weighs 7 lbs or more, you can use the cat sized dose. My rabbit gets a seasonal flare up of mites and the advantage normally has it cleared up in a week.. What you bought will NOT work at all if your rabbits has mites/mange.

Be careful to get the advantage on the skin, not the fur and apply it in an area that your rabbit can't l**k like the back of the neck..

Here's a good link about it..

They recommend a couple different things including ivermectin, but, ivermectin has to be given in very tiny doses. From personal experience, I would recommend a cat sized dose of Advantage flea killer. Might as well buy a three month pack as more then likely this will be a recurring problem in the spring/summer of next year too..

  5. Ok...sorry to hear about your rabbit.

hexacholophene urea sulfanilamide cream is a cream used for bacterial infections (staphloccoccal), not parasitic infestations (mites, worms etc). Ulcerations means "An ulcer or an ulcerous condition." or "The development of an ulcer." TBH ive never heard of the product before, but i wouldnt used it on my rabbit because it is not for parasitic infestations.

Hope your rabbit gets better soon !

  6. For mange around the eyes camomile tea helps with easing the pain. A cream for ulceration will do very little for mange but bathing him in salt water will help to fight the infection. Your vets may only treat cats and dogs but they should be trained to treat small animals and rodents too.
