Treble Jig wins the Jebel Ali Stakes sponsored by Shadwell at Jebel Ali Racecourse, and he is now targeted for the handicap at the Carnival 2012
The five-year-old bay horse of Gone West out of Light Jig, Treble Jig won the Dh500,000 Jebel Ali Stakes, sponsored by Shadwell, at Jebel Ali Racecourse on 13th January.
Emmrooz, who won the stakes last year, was again being pointed towards winning the race this year as well, but could not succeed in achieving that.
It was being predicted before the race that Yirga was the most sought out rival for Emmrooz, specifically in reference to Emmrooz giving his winning chances a second attempt for the same race.
Yirga was entered as the 9 to 4 favourite in the race.
The field was set for twelve to race and compete for the title. Breaking from the ninth stall was M Al Muhairi trained Treble Jig, who did not wait long to assume the lead, and raced ahead, 1 ½ furlong out.
He kept racing on without any challenge or threat from the rest of the lot and won the race by ten lengths.
The last year’s title holder, Emmrooz, runner up this year, under training of D. Selvaratnam, stayed in the rear till the mid-division, and burst into speed in the last three furlongs.
Approaching the final 1 ½ furlongs, he tried his best to overcome the leader, but failed due to the slow pace during the final furlong.
Third in line behind the winner was S Seemar trained Ibn Al Nafis, who was ridden by Richard Mullen.
The 9 to 4 favourite of the race, Yirga was positioned seventh in the race.
The trainer said:
"He's shown that he can handle any surface, so we'd like to take our chances with him wherever we can. Next stop will be a handicap at the Carnival, should his rating make him eligible, which I think it will. He's got plenty of improvement and we'd
like to think that he can win some serious races for us”.
This race marked the very first victory for Treble Jig for the 2012 season, and now his outstanding performance has convinced the connections about the horse’s potential of giving them further enviable victories through the course of the season.
Currently their focus revolves around the possibilities that Treble Jig can take chances in the Dubai World Cup Carnival 2012, after winning the Jebel Ali Stakes on 13th January.
