Question:

Tree Fern Help (Dicksonia Antarctica)?

Hi

I bought a tree fern about a month ago. I have been reading up on them and some sites say they do not root at all and others say they take 6months to root again after planting?

Do they root from the bottom again? I know you water them at the top of the crown, where I was led to believe the root of the plant is, as if you cut it in half the top will continue to grow, but the bottom wont apparently? If this is the case, surely it WON'T root from the bottom again?

I am concerned as I bought a large pot to put it in, but am now worried if it sprouts roots I am going to have to re pot it again sooner rather than later?

Any advice appreciated.

:o)

  1. Just pot it and give it loads of TLC, but do not let it get cold ie protect it from frost

  2. Just pot it and enjoy although it will probably be better in the ground, protect crown from frosts and damp during the winter seas if you are in the UK.

  3. It does not have any roots. However a lot of people confuse the shoots at the bottom for roots. In facts these tendrils at the bottom help to stabilish the trunk and stop it from falling over in the wild. You can put them in concrete and they will grow. The fern does not need roots to grow,as it gets everything it needs from air and water.

If you cut the fern into pieces, after the first year they should all grow,if kept moist
