Me and my daughter are having a disagreement. See, i said trees breathe in oxygen and my daughter says they breathe in carbon dioxide, then breathe out oxygen. What do trees breathe?

  1. Technically they don't breathe, but putting that aside

    You are both right

Trees perform both photosynthesis as well as cellular respiration

Most plants (C3) plants perform photosynthesis during the day when there is light and then perform cellular respiration at night when there is no sunlight

Photosynthesis is a process that intakes carbon dioxide and puts out oxygen

Cellular respiration is a process that uses oxygen and outputs carbon dioxide

However most people just associate plants with photosynthesis

  2. Trees don't actually breath in the strictest sense of the word, but they are aerobes and they do require oxygen, which they acquire at all times from the atmosphere. It is only when they are photosynthesizing that they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. However, they are a net producer of oxygen.

  3. Trees are alive and they need to breathe. they breathe through their leaves. The underside of leaves are covered with tiny holes through which oxygen and other gases are taken in.

  4. Both.

In the dark, they use oxygen and release CO2 in respiration.

In the light, they still do that, but they also use CO2 and release oxygen in photosynthesis. Averaged out over 24 hours, they release more oxygen than they use. That's assuming that the day is nice and bright, and the tree has leaves on it!

  5. your daugther's right.

tree's take in carbon dioxide and transform them into sugars which has a by product of oxygen that it breathes out.
