Question:

Tree for front lawn in New Mexico?

I am looking to plant a tree in my front lawn. I live in eastern New Mexico. What I am looking for is a small tree, hopefully one that will never get too big. Preferably I would like it to be a flowering tree. I was looking at Cherry trees but any information on types of tress would be great. I don't know much about this stuff so your opinions will be much appreciated.

  1. There is a tree used by landscapers, here in North Texas. I can only think right now that is something pear. It doesn't grow too tall, has a nice leafage, and does sprout blossoms yearly. Check with a nursery about the name, and I think you will enjoy this species of tree in your yard. Sorry I can't think of the name.

  2. You might want to look into Chitalpa Trees (The Chitalpa is a cross between Catalpa bignonioides and Chilopsis linearis, Chilopsis is also called Desert Willow).  They can be pruned to remain small.  The flowers produced are small Orchid appearing pale pink to mauve in coloration.

I live in Arizona and have two of these in front of my house.  They are quite lovely.

  3. I planted a "Purple-Robed Locust" tree in my front yard. It gets to be about 20 ft high and the blooms are cluster-like pink flowers. This tree grows fast and looks pretty. It is deciduous and will lose it's leaves in the fall. It only holds its blooms for about a month in my area (San Diego, CA).
