Question:

Tree root question please?

I have a friend who has what appears to be some sort of Bartlet Pair Tree with little round green things on it. Anyway, she lives in a neighborhood where everyone has them, except I guess some have the little green things, and some do not. (Male vs Females?)

Hers is the only one whose roots appear to be growing out of the ground. Would anyone know why?

She said she hates that tree because when it blooms, although it is pretty, it stinks. She is an elderly lady and lives in a smaller house with little yard around. She has had dirt added and bricks to decorate but the roots are moving the bricks too.

Any ideas on what she should do?

Thanks for all your kind answers.

  1. yeah those trees  dont grow pears and do stink badly. i would cut them down. like that other dude said.

  2. is her back yard prone to flooding? if so , these may be some type of river maple, or a type of poplar,  the roots comming up means there is too much water in her ground/ does she use a sprinkler for her flowers?

  3. cut it down.  make the area a mulch/color bed

  4. Surface rooting is caused by light watering or dry conditions.

If she was watering this tree deeply the roots would chase the water down into the soil.  Shallow watering means the roots stay on the top to get the only available water and don't need to go down.

Start giving it a deep watering once a week in the growing season and your root problems will disappear.
