Question:

Trek hybrid or fitness bike?

I would like to get a bike for casual use as well as exercise and some long weekend rides - if all goes well ideally more than the weekends - I plan on staying on roads though can say if I'll ever end up on a dirt road somewhere.

I like Trek - My question is if I should go for the hybrid (7100/7200) or one of the fitness (7.2FX) ? (There is a price difference, FX is more.)

Also I am female and can't figure out if the WSP -women specific design- really makes a difference or not. (I'm 5'4")

Thanks!

  1. I would recommend the WSD for you if you have typical female proportions (longer legs and shorter torso). WSD bikes proportion better for women. The FX is going to be much more enjoyable to ride, and if you really get into riding it is going to take you much further. I would recommend the 7.3 WSD. It is a much better bike than the 7.2. It is lighter with better parts. It is going to be much easier to ride and increase the chances of you using the bike.

  2. The 7.2 FX will be a nicer ride but depending on how much you plan to ride, the 7100 may work fine, for someone of your size i would recomend WSD. Women closer to 5'7" or 5'8" can get away with a regular frame pretty comfortably but you would be much more comfortable riding a WSD.

  3. If you want the possibility of longer rides in the future, i would go with the Fx bike.

In my opinion, front suspension is not that necessary and will probably  get in the way when extending your bike rides.

Trek Fx work well on both roads & pathways.

They are bullt too last (my Trek 7100fx has rarely failed me), additional bar-ends provide multiple hand positions, it's possible to put on racks & fenders (to make a good commuter/touring bike) & there are adequate granny gears.

The tyres are usually 35's, but it's posible to go as skinny as 28's (for faster rides ) & there is room for adjustment in the handle bars.

    Finding the Right Bike

To really enjoy cycling, it's important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike:

    The Right Ride

In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:

    Road and Racing Bikes

    Mountain Bikes

    Comfort/Cruiser Bikes

I think you want Comfort/Cruiser Bikes because

casual tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

    The Right Size

Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.
