Trek vs Cannondale, What's the difference?

My wife and I are looking for bikes. We are both beginners. We live in Madison, WI and have a good selection of both Trek and Cannondale bikes to choose from. We are thinking hybrids or comfort hybrids. We need help trying to determine what the main difference is between these two brands and what would be the best buy!

I was originally going to purchase a Trek until I learned where they were made.  I am now going to purchase a Cannondale tomorrow.  I support MADE IN THE USA!
