Trent Baalke promoted to San Francisco 49ers general manager
Trent Baalke has been promoted from vice president of player personnel to the new general manager of the San Francisco 49ers.
Now that the search for the general manager is over, it’s time to look for a new head coach.
Ex-coach Mike Singletary was fired on December 27th after losing to the St. Louis Rams, giving them a 6-10 record. Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula was then named the interim head coach, leading the team to win over the Arizona Cardinals in the
final game of the season.
Baalke was officially hired as the team’s new general manager even though he was known to be the number one candidate for a week now. On top of his duties as vice president of player personnel, he will be taking on more responsibilities including looking
for their new head coach.
With Baalke formally in office, the Niners are now in position to try their best in acquiring Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh. Although he is already believed to be in contact with the team, Harbaugh may be approached officially by the Niners as early as
Wednesday.
With plenty of people after Harbaugh, he came back to the Bay Area after his team won the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida. The Stanford Cardinals ended the season 12-1.
Baalke has been with the franchise for six years and spent most of the team’s 38-7 win over the Cardinals shaking hands with fans at Candlestick Park.
"I would like to thank Jed York and the York family for this tremendous opportunity," Baalke said in a statement. "It is an honor to be named the general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, a franchise with a history filled by some of the game's greatest
players, coaches and executives. I look at this role as one of great responsibility -- to not only the history of the franchise, but also to the 49ers faithful. My entire focus is now dedicated to finding the next head coach of the 49ers."
