Tres Borrachos found amazing form under new ownership
The six-year-old gelding, Tres Borrachos had not won a stakes race in three years time and on top of it he had not won a single race in two years time, his last race was back in 2009 when he won an Allowance claimer at Hollywood Park on 25 May, 2009.
Ever since George Hicker bought the 6-year-old gelding in a private purchase in an undisclosed term, Tres Borrachos has looked nothing like the Tres Borrachos of the last two years, as he straight away making his debut for owner George Hicker and trainer
Marty Jones, landed the Grade 2 $200,000San Diego Handicap.
The son of Ecton Park, out of Pete’s Fancy by Peteski, Tres Borrachos entered the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap for the first time in any race for owner George Hicker and the gelding shell shocked his opponents as well as his new owner.
Tres Borrachos took on a distance of 1 1/16 miles on synthetic surface under jockey R Bejarano, and he covered the distance in a fast 1 minute and 42.71 seconds.
On the way Tres Borrachos defeated Kevlar Kid and Spurrier and they finished second and third respectively.
Tres Borrachos’s fortunes have changed dramatically as he is pointed to the $1million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on 28 August, 2011.
Before Hicker acquired Tres Borrachos, he was a winner of 4 races out of 31 lifetime starts and he had the lifetime earnings of $760,257. In the 2008 Preakness Stakes, Tres Borrachos ran his heart out and finished ninth to Big Brown.
It slightly opened the gates for Tres Borrachos as he went on to win the Grade 2 Swaps Stakes in 2008, and in 2009 he won a Allowance claimer but then afterwards fell into an endless loop where he had to go through a period of 13 consecutive defeats.
However, after all this sent at 8 to 1, a long shot winning the San Diego Handicap seems Tres Borrachos’s fortunes are turning for the better under new ownership.
Hicker described the transformed Tres Borrachos as someone who has been taught how to run by trainer Marty Jones. Tres Borrachos was used to run from the front in all the races he has run, but Jones taught the gelding to come off the pace and then compete.
His new connections had concern over him running at Del Mar, because Tres Borrachos had run at Del Mar twice and he lost twice, but Hicker said that he had all the faith in Marty Jones and he saddled a good one at Del Mar.
His 22nd stakes appearance will be the Grade 1 Pacific Classic and he will be facing the likes of Game on Dude and Twirling Candy,  a tall order for the new and improved Tres Borrachos.
