Trevor Bayne becomes youngest winner of Daytona 500 – NASCAR news
The annual 53rd Daytona 500 scripted a new page of victory chapter. 20-year-old Trevor Bayne ran the Wood Brothers Racing again into the victory lane since 2001.
David Pearson‘s Car No. 21 Ford was the machine Bayne rod to the chequered-flag drop. Bayne ran 0.118 seconds ahead of Carl Edwards to finish the last lap of Daytona 500. It was his second attempt to the chequered finish at Daytona International Speedway.
Bayne is now the first driver to win Daytona 500 in his first attempt since 1959 when Lee Petty won the inaugural event. Bayne held counter to Jamie McMurray in winning at the start of the career, by the win of his second start in Sprint Sup Series.
David Gilliland finished third after bumping Carl Edwards in the front for last two laps. Bobby Labonte finished fourth at his debut with JTG/Daugherty Racing. Budweiser Shootout winner, Kurt Busch, closed at fifth position. The race held 74 lead changes,
22 different leaders and 16 cautions.
David Pearson, three-time Cup Champion was at the event as the member of 2011 NASCAR Hall of Fame class. After David Pearson’s victory since 1976 at Daytona 500, Bayne gave Wood Brothers its fifth title of Daytona 500. In total, Wood Brothers gained
its 98th victory at Daytona after Buddy Baker won Firecracker 400 in 1983.
Bayne was filled with pure excitement at the victory lane when he shared his views with the press. He could not believe that he won the race just by appearing in the second Sprint Cup.
His victory was a highly remarkable effort as his car was wrecked at the last few hundred yards in second Gatorade Duel 150 Qualifying race on Thursday. He missed the practice sessions on Friday as his team was repairing the primary car.
Carl Edwards was just a little upset with his runner-up finish but did not envy the pleasant victory of Trevor Bayne. Edwards was filled up with thoughts to reassess the situation in the final laps that could give him the glory of the victory. He felt
it to be a long time to get set with his ending of the day.
Previously, Jeff Gordon holds the title to be the youngest driver of Daytona 500 being just over 25 years old in 1997. Whereas Bobby Allison holds to be the eldest driver ever to win Daytona 500 aging 2 months over his 50th year in 1988.
The Toyota’s of Michael Waltrip and David Reutimann got in contact at turn 3 and triggered the wild drama of a twelve-car wreckage. It happened in the early part of the race by just 29 laps down setting a different pace for the race.
Jimmie Johnson was totalled in a 17 cars pile-up, he returned to the race after 19 laps and finished 24th.
Whenever the Daytona International Speedway is repaved, it marks a new scene for the history of NASCAR legend. Bayne just turned 20 years old day before the race.
