  1. I'd say he was an above average fighter at best.

As a former champ, this does give him credibility; however he held onto the belt for only 8 months before Tyson obliterated him.

When he won the WBC belt from Pinklon Thomas it was a huge upset.

He did go the 15 round distance with the legendary Larry Holmes and even though many say he "ended Muhammad Ali's career" because he was the last person to beat him, the reality is that Ali was badly deteriorated and faded at the time and was even showing some signs of his current illness.

He did have a really tough chin. If you saw his fight VS Tyson, he ate a lot of shots that would have put a normal person to sleep and kept standing...well for a little while anyways!

  2. Rugged, durable, at his best highly determined. Yet mentally skewered, which lead him to losing a number of fights he should have won. Had some out of ring problems and was owned by Don King for the mostpart. He also came up in that era of early 80's heavyweights where outside of Larry, it was just a revolving door. May have been interesting to see what he would have done against Dokes, Witherspoon, Page, a Thomas rematch, etc.

  3. He was a decent fighter, but not anything worth bragging about.  He was the last person to fight Muhammad Ali, and he won a decision against a severely past his prime Ali.  He first challenged for the title when he went up against Larry Holmes and lost a decision (which is an accomplishment in itself becuase Larry could hit).  He won the WBC title against Pinklon Thomas and he lost his title to Mike Tyson, which made Tyson the youngest heavyweight champ of all time.
