Trevor Cahill collects praise from Oakland’s Bob Melvin, credits confidence for strong display
The Oakland Athletics were up to the task on Thursday, September 22 to beat the Texas Rangers 4-3 and avoid a clean sweep. The club was on the verge of crashing out at Oakland Coliseum but second baseman Jemile Weeks pulled three runs out of the visiting
pitchers, while Trevor Cahill turned in a calm pitching session against the top offensive line up in the American League West.
Cahill went over 6.2 innings to keep the A’s in the chase for the game. He allowed three runs off ten hits and a walk. All the while he struck-out one hitter and ended his bout with an earned run average of 4.31. Manager Bob Melvin was pleased to see the
star at his best form and he did not back out from praising the hurler after the game.
"He threw a lot more strikes than balls, he got ahead in the count and gave up some hits, but when you're working with strike one and ahead of the count, it gives you that much more confidence as a pitcher," Melvin said. "That's a line up you want to be
picky with, but I think he had enough of that and threw the ball over the plate and trusted his stuff."
Confidence has been Cahill’s major reflection against the Rangers. In the six starts he has had against Texas, he has gone 3-2. His earned run average against the heavy hitters in the line-up is 3.10.
"I think, for some reason, I always feel sharp against them," he said.
The player believes that finishing the series loss with a game win provides a positive outlook on the A’s current condition. The team will take that momentum to Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels in the upcoming series. It will be interesting to see
how the A’s battle it out against the Angels.
Cahill is 10-13 in the season and he has one more game to play before the 2011 season comes to an end. He will be looking to put in a brilliant performance against the tough Angels in their next series.
