Trevor Cahill shines as Oakland Athletics defeat San Francisco Giants 2-1 – MLB Update
The Oakland Athletics defeated the San Francisco Giants 2-1 to win the third match of the series and complete a 3-0 whitewash at O.co Coliseum, Oakland on June, 19.
Trevor Cahill, the starting pitcher for A’s, displayed some outstanding pitching, conceiving only five hits and one run with seven strike-outs in eight innings with an ERA of 3.24. He managed 74 strikes of the total 118 pitches. Cahill, who had been 0-5
with an ERA of 5.67 in his previous seven starts, improved his winning record to 7-5, winning for the first time since May 9.
"Before, I was yanking a lot of pitches, and instead of throwing that sinker away it was just kind of cutting," Cahill said after the game. "Today I kind of got the feeling for it coming back over the plate to righties and inside to lefties. I just think
the command was there more than in the last couple of starts."
He was well supported by the relief pitcher Brian Fuentes who managed a 12th save of his 15 chances this season.
Matt Cain, on the other hand put up an equal contest from the Giants managing five strike-outs and conceiving only three hits and one run in the seven innings he pitched. Sadly enough, he was left with a fifth no-decision of the season, ending a three-game
winning streak.
It was Landon Powell’s massive right-handed hit in the eighth inning which shifted the tide. It was his 10th career home-run and his first since September. The 404 feet hit to the Giants’ reliever Jeremy Affeldt extended the A’s season-high winning
streak to five.
Expressing himself on hitting a right-handed hit after a month Powell said, "I hadn't hit right-handed in a month so I was just trying to simplify my swing, get my foot down early and be short to the ball, he came at me with fastballs and I was just able
to get the fat part of the bat on it and drive it."
The first two games of the series saw the Athletics defeating the Giants rather comprehensively with scores of 5-2 and 4-2 for the first and second games respectively.
Oakland will next travel to play the New York Mets for a three match series from Tuesday with the Giants playing Minnesota during the same days. It will be interesting to see how the Athletics carry their winning momentum into their next match-up.
