Trevor Cahill shines as Oakland Athletics topple Seattle Mariners 7-0 – MLB Update
Trevor Cahill put in a brilliant performance as he threw seven scoreless innings to help Oakland Athletics overwhelm Seattle Mariners 7-0 on Tuesday, September 27 at Safeco Field.
The seven scoreless innings from Trevor Cahill ensured the A’s would not concede a single run in the full nine innings.
The unsung heroes of the night had to be Josh Willingham and Scott Sizemore. Both hitters were on top of their game as they displayed their tremendous skills for the series drawing win. Cahill was an amazing star who did not falter in front of an unpredictable
batting line-up. He pitched seven innings, conceding just four hits. The hurler picked up seven strike-outs while he reduced his earned run average to 4.16. He ends his season with a 12-14 standing.
Blake Beavan on the other hand, was expensive for the Mariners. He was the main culprit in the encounter as the young pitcher gave up all seven runs from eight hits and two walks. His five innings of pitching produced a deficit that manager Eric Wedge could
not wipe out from the score board.
Oakland was on the offensive from the very first inning. Beavan went 5-5 in the game but this was a disappointing outing that the Mariners will be looking at on Wednesday when they take on the visitors for the last game of the season.
The A’s kicked off their game with Jemile Weeks in the attack at the top of the first. He ground out and on came Coco Crisp. The player was allowed to walk and Hideki Matsui came in to bat. Crisp stole second base to pressurise Beavan. He succeeded in his
strategy as Matsui hit the pitcher for a single and Crisp moved to third base. With two bases occupied, Josh Willingham came in to smash a home-run to the left as the play brought in three instant runs.
Mariners were shell shocked and they were unable to respond in the entire game. At 3-0 up, the A’s capitalised in the top of the third. Willingham scored his second run of the game when he was led home by a Scott Sizemore single. The team gained another
run immediately after that as Kurt Suzuki hit a sacrifice fly to left-field. The sacrifice allowed David DeJesus to run home from third base.
The A’s were five runs up and they added two more in the top of the fifth. The club made it 7-0 when Sizemore smashed a homer to the left to get Matsui home. The two players ran to the dugout and ticked the scoreboard with two important runs. Unable to respond,
the Mariners lost the encounter 7-0.
