Trevor Gretzky, Son of Hockey Legend Wayne Gretzky drafted by MLB Chicago Cubs –NHL News Update
It might be hard for a son to choose a different sport than his father, especially if his father was considered the best at it, but Trevor Gretzky, son of hockey legend, Wayne Gretzky, was picked up by Chicago Cubs in the Major League Baseball (MLB) amateur
draft as the 219th pick overall in round-seven during the month of June, but recently signed to a deal on Thursday, July 21.
Wayne Gretzky, better known as the legend of legends and considered to be the best ice hockey player the world has ever seen, had made a choice not to bind his son to the sport he loved and played for so long. Gretzky, had decided that whatever his son,
Trevor was passionate about, he would be happy in that.
"I was introduced to it in New York, when my dad was playing for the Rangers", Trevor said in a previous interview before being drafted. "I remember him taking me to a Yankee game, and ever since then I wanted to play and it's been my dream to be in the
Major Leagues since then".
After his selection, Trevor faced a decision to either pursue his studies and accept a scholarship offer with San Diego State University where he could continue playing for the varsity team, or either ink a deal with Cubs by the August 15 closing date.
It turns out, after nearly a month of discussions with his legendary father, highly regarded as the Michael Jordan of hockey, Trevor Gretzky decided that the major league offer would be better and signed on.
San Diego State University baseball team coach and former Hall of Famer, Tony Gwynn, was all praise for both father and son.
“Wayne mentioned how he started his pro career as a 17-year-old, how if you work hard enough you can make it. The father is a nice guy. He totally gets it, understands the pro game. And the son is very mature”, said Gwynn.
Wayne Gretzky achieved what no other hockey player has so far been able to do, living up to his father’s name in baseball, would extend the family tradition of record breaking to more than a single sport.
