Trey Canard out of 2011 AMA Supercross title contention with a broken femur
Factory Honda’s Trey Canard got injured last Wednesday, 13 April, at the Competitive Edge MX Park in Hesperia, California. He was testing out for the American Motorcyclist Association Lucas Oil Motocross Championships, scheduled to start from
21 May in Sacramento, California, when he crashed and ended up with a broken femur.
The 20-year-old from Oklahoma will be unable to compete in the last three rounds of the 17-round Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship and possibly the first two rounds of the Motocross series.
American Honda Racing Team Manager, Erik Kehoe, said in his official statement that, “Trey suffered a non-displaced fracture to his femur when he crashed at a team test. The good news is that the fracture is not as severe as it might have been. We are hopeful
Trey's return to racing will come soon. It's very disappointing to see him get hurt, especially after the fantastic Supercross season he's having.”
According to reports, Canard is expected to be back in the competitive scene within the next six weeks.
Prior to the recent accident, Canard was having a remarkable season. He was participating in his first AMA Supercross season and so far had been making a strong impact. After the first 14-rounds, he found himself sitting at fifth place in the championship
standings. He had managed to bag three wins and now sat just 20 points behind the current leader of the series, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto.
With three rounds still to go, Canard had a very good chance to get his hands on the title and become the second rider to have achieved such an accomplishment in his rookie year. The only rider to have accomplished this feat is TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed.
Unfortunately, the femur injury has put him out for six weeks, which has consequently eliminated him from the title contention and ended his dream-like season.
This is not the first time that Canard has found himself with a broken femur at a very crucial time. In 2008, he had suffered a similar injury during the AMA Motocross Nationals that were being held in Washougal, Washington.
According to reports, Canard is really disappointed over the premature end to his first AMA Supercross-class season, especially when he was doing so well. For the last couple of months, he had been competing against some of the world’s best Supercross athletes,
which included Reed and Villopoto along with James Stewart and Ryan Dungey. To make it to the top five and even win several races in his rookie year, Canard could not have hoped for a better way to kick off his Superclass-class career.
Canard’s fans are hoping for his quick recovery and anxiously waiting to see him in action at the Lucas Oil Motocross Championships soon.
