  1. It's cool that you're getting into it!   If I were you, I'd consider buying a used bike once you get to know a little about them.  You can save a ton of money that way and see if you like the sport without dropping too much cash on it at first.   Check out the links, forums, and classifieds at http://www.observedtrials.net , http://www.trashzen.com (mostly U.K. stuff but worth looking at), http://www.pinkbike.com , and http://www.ridemonkey.com

For buying a new bike in the states, the best place is http://www.webcyclery.com .  These guys have a decent selection, too, when they have stuff in stock:  http://www.midwestbiketrials.com/store/i...

Hope this helps get you started....if you have more questions post up!   :o)

EDIT:  if you're curious, here are a couple links to pics and vids I got of a nat trials competition this spring.  I don't have any street stuff up there right now, just nats.  http://www.vimeo.com/album/13731 , http://picasaweb.google.com/cozolins.1/T...

  2. dear editor,

"trials bike", as in it's a style of riding. whilst we're all lumped together here as cyclists, we all tend to focus on various subsets, and subsets within subsets. some of us cross various subsets to create new subsets, but I'd need at least 5 venn diagrams to explain it properly!

  3. norco makes a pretty nice trials bike: http://www.norco.com/bikes/mountain/tria...  anything with a hydro v brake on the back and a light frame should work fine

  4. Trail bike, as in mountain bike, or trial bike, as in rentals?
