Question:

Tribal Vegetarians?

I am intersted in learning of tribal/pastoral/nomacid peoples anywhere on Earth who follow vegetarian/vegan (or predominantly so) diets. I am already well aware of such tribal groups the world over who take meat/fish-based diets, and what is of interest now are those who eat no meat, whether due to climatic, availability, religious and/or ethical reasons...

  1. in aboriginal societies veganism does not exist. It is only in industrialized societies where people voluntarily eat a diet that is out of touch with nature. Meat may be a luxury or scarcity in many places, but people will eat it when they get the chance. In some places people will eat nothing but meat - which does give you vitamins and minerals (you just have to eat parts that most of us throw away)

  2. Hindus

  3. Look up the Jains of India, although they are more of a religious group than an actual tribe!

  4. There aren't any.

No hunter gatherer group has ever been observed to be vegetarian. They can't affford to restrict their food intake in any way. In fact, the average H/G calories from flesh is 65%, making vegetable matter a minority part of the diet. The lowest flesh intake seen was about 10%, I think, but I can't remember the group.
