Tribute to Derek Boogaard at Excel Energy Center
Although, Derek Boogaard was in the middle of a four year deal with the New York Rangers, it was the Minnesota Wild’s home arena that paid tribute to the player.
There were several fans, Minnesota Wild administration and the family members of Boogaard, who gathered at the Excel Energy Center, to talk about one of the most generous and hard working people in the National Hockey League.
Boogaard was among some of the tough men that the NHL has come across and faced a lot of difficulties, especially concussions.
The 28-year old player was found dead this past Friday (May 13, 2011) in his apartment, which came as a shock for many people.
His family has decided to donate his brain to a Medical University. Though an initial autopsy has taken place and we are still waiting to hear as to what was the cause of his death.
"It's an amazing thing he did and his family did. Hopefully, that'll bring some information", agent Ron Salcer said.
The agent, who spent about three years with the player, said that his client was felling better after the concussion, that had hindered him from spending time on ice.
"He seemed very good, and that's what makes it more painful", Salcer said. "He was really starting to feel better about everything. He was in great shape".
Police have confirmed that there are no signs of anything suspicious at the moment but the final word will be said once the autopsy results are made public.
His family that included his parents, sister, and, brother, were present at the Excel Energy Center, as well, and, took turns to talk about him.
The memorial gathering was made after a facebook poll was conducted that asked people to come to the Minnesota Wild home arena, as they wanted to pay tribute to Boogaard.
His sister had this to say about the brother, who fulfilled her every need, and was always there for her:
"Derek was dependable to a fault. You could depend on him for anything you needed. At any time, your priority became his priority", she said.
Boogaard’s funeral was held in Regina, Saskatchewan.
