Can someone give me some tips for trickle charging a waverunner? (2006 Seadoo RXP)

What is a better setting, 6 or 12 amps?

Do you just leave it plugged in all the time?, if not how long do you leave it plugged in for? I'm using the ski weekly.

Thanks!

  1. If you use it weekly, you shouldn't have to charge it. I've got a 2004 GTX Limited. I trickle charged it once, after it sat for a year. I put it on 12, let it charge for about 7 hours, took it out, ran it, and let the 'alternator' charge the battery.

  2. I presume you are charging the battery because of the draw from the auto bilge pump.  Best idea is to plug in your charger at the lowest setting for about 4 - 6 hrs, the evening before you plan on using it.  Or, you could buy a new style, computer controlled charger, and don't worry about it.  When buying your new battery, buy the best you can find, the cheapies aren't worth a pinch of p**p.

  3. Unless you have a really crappy grade battery for your PWC, it should not require regular external charging during typical ideal and peak boating season.

If for some reason you are draining the battery too badly, you need to either see if you are taking on too much water when you operate it, see if the PWC's electrical system is not fully charging it, or buy a better battery.

The only time you should need to charge your PWC's battery IF you bought a good quality one is after you pull it out of it and store it in a shed or garage.

Always pull your PWC's battery out at the end of PWC operating season and store it in a shed or garage sheltered from the harsh temperature extremes.

Then ONLY trickle charge it (1 to 2 amp max charge rate) once or twice during the offseason for about 3 to 7 hours each time.

For all the years my father owned a PWC,  all he had to do was pull the battery after he prepped it for the winter, store it in the shed, and trickle charge it twice through the offseason.

He always bought a mainstream, good quality battery for his PWC and it usually lasted 2 to 3 years easily.

  4. trickle is less than 2 amps.

I would set it at 6 and let it run an hour before using ski.
