i'm going to be a freshman in high school, and for band we have to memorize our music.

we're playing the 4th of july parade in our town, and have to have th music memorized by the 5th.

are there any tricks to doing this? or do i just have to continue to play it over and over until it's stuck in my brain?

  1. One cute trick I found is to start at the end of the piece, instead of the beginning. Play the last measure. Once you have that one pretty well, play the measure before it, and continue onto the last measure. Each time you go through, it reinforces the last measures as you progress through the piece.

It gives your brain a little bit of a break, and lets you think of the music a little differently. Give it a try!

  2. Just keep practicing. Music is the the only thing which remains all the time and can never get out of your memory..

  3. Just playing it over and over helps. I have to memorize a lot of songs for marching band too, and I think that it helps if you know the tune of the song. Faking it also works pretty well.

  4. I agree with Doc.  My piano teacher taught me the "learn it backwards" method a long time ago.  So many people know the beginning of the music a lot better than the end.  So if you learn the end first, and only add more after you've memorized each measure or section, every time you play it you will reinforce the parts that might otherwise be the quickest to slip away.

This is a good method for memorizing solos too.

  5. I have to do the same thing but my band plays on all football games.

I think that the best way to memorize music is by taking it into parts and then putting them together.

by the way I play the clarinet

    well good luck!!

  6. say the notes aloud or in your head all day at the same time finger the notes too(depending on the instrument).
