ok i am doing a project about trident energy: producing energy by waves and floats in the sea move up and down causing electricity to produce. i wanetd to know this question: what is the cost of producing this platform at sea, and if this type of energy is more or less expensive than traditionally methods. thank you for the help,, anyone skilled in this field is greatly appreciated.

  1. The problem with wave energy is that the amplitude is so low that using it to generate significant amounts of power is not practical.  There are, however, several projects that harness the tides by damming tidal pools and using the flow to generate hydro power- one of the biggest such installations is in the Bay of Fundy.

  2. If there are no answers from a skilled in the field person, you maybe able to find answers at www.inri.us.  Its the web site of Independent Natural Resources, Inc. which makes SEADOG pumps for producing energy by waves.  Also involved is Verdant PowerLLC, & Oceana Energy Company.  Here what wikipedia.com says about Oceana:  Oceana Energy Company is a tidal power company based in Washington, DC. It is noted for having secured preliminary site permits for tidal power installations in various states and for being managed by high-profile lawyers. Critics, including Verdant Power (who is building tidal turbines near Manhattan Island), accuse the company of squatting on prime locations identified earlier by EPRI, a utilities' research group. Sean O'Neill, president of the Ocean Renewable Energy Coalition, says he is unsure if Oceana is acting speculatively, but that "Any company that is banking sites should be tarred and feathered."

  3. Power production from wave energy has been toyed with for a long while now... apparently there are some new ideas that might make something of it, finally. So far, the results have been disappointing.

Tidal power is still easier, in theory. Traditional methods, like damming and retaining water (such as was attempted in the Bay of Fundy), would be relatively simple to effect- the problem has been that there is a backlash. In the case of the Bay of Fundy, damming tidal volume sufficient to generate power would alter the tidal cycle- flooding Boston, some 200 miles to the south. This is why tidal energy projects have stagnated too.
