  1. Remember that tomato plants don't last forever put there are a few things you can do. Best to try to ripen them on the vine. To do this, pinch off any blooms that are starting to form. Once a frost is predicted, pull up the entire plant and place it in a protected area like a garage.  The tomatoes will continue to ripen.

Once in the house with green tomatoes try these suggestions:

Placing them on a sunny window sill. This is a hit or miss solution. You’ll have much better luck ripening mature green tomatoes. Although the tomatoes are more stable sitting on their stem side, they will rot less readily if you can place them blossom side down.

Wrapping individual green tomatoes in newspaper and layering in a box, no more than 2 layers deep. Place the box in a dark, dry spot and check weekly for progress. It usually takes 3-4 weeks for the green tomatoes to ripen, but check frequently and remove any fruits that show signs of rotting.

Placing the green tomatoes in a paper bag with a ripe apple. The apple gives off ethylene gas, which speeds up ripening. Check the bag daily.

If all that fails, fry up some green tomatoes!

  2. Maybe you should take the bananas out of the bag and let them sit on the counter for a couple of days. Thats what I do. Unless you are making fried green tomatoes, let them stay on the vine til ripened.

  3. If you picked them to early...they may never get to the way you want them.

  4. Slice and fry up the tomatoes in a little oil with a little breading, they are Great that way. Next time leave them on the vine until they ripen.

  5. put them in a brown paper bag and put them in a cupboard. they will be ripe in a few days. i have a garden and have been doing this for a long time. works perfect.

fyi: my tomatoes are not completely green they are yellowish/orange and they turn red in a few days. i don't think it will work if they are completely green but you can try it.

  6. I have put them in a brown paper bag for 2-3 days. I've also heard that putting an apple in the paper bag with the tomatoes helps, but I've never tried it.

Depending on how "green" the tomatoes are, they may not ripen.

  7. it takes SUNLIGHT to ripen a tomato!!!... have you tried putting them on a sunny windowsill like all the folks I've ever known with green 'maters have done it?????.... the sunlight is why you're supposed to leave them on the VINE until ripe..... and if you just HAVE to take them off the vine, then a sunny window is the next move....

  8. I think they're probably too green to ripen.  Sorry about your tomatoes, but fry them up and they'll be delicious.
