Question:

Trimming Impatiens?

My Impatiens are getting to tall. I know that I can trim off the top 1/3 of the plants, but that is basically all of the flowers. If I cut off the top 1/3 will the flowers grow back quickly? Are there any pictures on the internet of exactly where to cut so my plants don't die?

  1. Trim off the top third of their vegetation. This will promote the emergence of new impatiens flowers, plus the plants will look better overall.

Overgrown plants may be trimmed. Mature plants typically bloom within 4-6 weeks after trimming depending on the severity of the cut.

Sorry but I couldn't find any images thought :(

  2. It doesn't much matter where you make the cut.  As long as you water and feed them (something with low N, since yours are leggy) impatiens will eagerly grow back and rebloom quickly.

If you are interested in preserving the bloom you've got, and have the time and energy, you can minimize your downtime by doing it piecemeal by hand.  Snap off the top third of every third stem one week, then do the next third the next week, and by the time you finish the first stems will start blooming again.
