Question:

Trimming fairly long hair?

hi, i am always hesitant to get a trim because i have fairly long hair--it has long layers (meaning the layers at the front of my face are not much shorter than the longest part of my hair in the back, which goes down to the middle of my back), and has soft waves. it's pretty healthy because i almost never straighten it, and i let it air dry a lot, especially during the summer.

how much should i ask to be trimmed off to maintain my length and perhaps gain one or two more inches? it grows rather slowly, but i don't have any (noticeable) split ends--it's just that i haven't gotten a trim since the beginning of june, and i've heard you are supposed to get trims more often than that. so i guess my question is really how often should i get my hair trimmed if i want it to grow just a bit longer, and how much should i ask to be trimmed off? thank you very much.

  1. I have the same kind of hair you are describing.  I have about 1/4 inch cut every 6-8 weeks.  Waiting any longer makes my hair fuzzy.

  2. Just tell them to cut off anything that's dead or dry. Doing that will make your hair stronger because breakage is what makes it hard to grow your hair out.

Also, try using the Pantene Beautiful Length collection. I want to grow my hair longer too, and it works so well. My hair is super shiny and soft.

  3. Cutting your hair doesn't actually make it grow faster. It just takes off the split ends that break and make it stay the same length. So if your hair is already healthy with no split ends or damage I would say you don't need to trim it.

  4. Stylists usually say you should get a trim every 6 weeks. However, if your hair is healthy and not over-styled (and it sounds like it is), I think you really need to trim less than that. I'd say between 2-4 months is good, as long as your hair looks good during that time. I usually wait 3 months or so before I get my hair trimmed, and just schedule an appointment once I start to see damage. But if you are trying to encourage growth, more frequent trims may be better. If the hair looks healthy, I'd just ask for a half inch or so of hair removed from the ends, and some more layers and styling. But you could also always ask the stylist what they recommend.
